TV Shows like The Driver

The Driver compresses an ordinary working life into a moral test: what happens when a despondent cab driver agrees to be the driver for a criminal gang, and how does that single concession recalibrate his household and sense of self? The claim hangs on a simple procedural fact — three hourlong installments on BBC One — and the series treats that constraint as a formal discipline rather than a limitation. David Morrissey’s Vince McKee is the visible axis; the writing credit in the payload anchors the serial’s argument to Daniel Brocklehurst’s compact plotting and insistence on character economy. Visually the drama privileges close, handheld observation and a slow-burn rhythm, using tight framing to keep the city at the edge of the frame rather than as a spectacle. Those choices produce a muted texture and a sense of claustrophobic movement: night shifts, cramped interiors, and the incremental erosion of ordinary routines. The three-part shape focuses attention on escalation rather than revelation, so the viewer tracks practical compromises and domestic fallout more than procedural set-pieces. That stylistic economy amplifies moral-unease without converting it into gesture. Read against a British network tradition of compact crime drama, The Driver substitutes intimate pressure for broad moral adjudication. It privileges the psychological specificity of a single working protagonist and the social logics that make a one-off decision contagious. The series therefore matters less as a how-to for crime plotting and more as a study in ethical-tension: a cautionary compression of consequence into everyday movement.
