“Chantal in Fairyland (2024) is a German 2020s absurdist comedy that folds influencer culture into Grimm-derived fairy-tale forms. It stages a conflict between performative identity and folkloric expectation using fluid-camera movement and saturated, contrastive mise-en-scène to signal the split between online and fairyland logics. The film repurposes familiar motifs to interrogate cultural prescriptions about desire and belonging, and in doing so it makes a case for why those old forms still matter psychologically.”
This film blends light-hearted absurdity with moments of sharp commentary on performative identity and societal expectations. As Chantal navigates a fantasy world, familiar fairy-tale motifs are turned into comic explorations of desire. It resonates with viewers who appreciate both humor and a critical eye on cultural norms.
