Secretary reframes workplace power into a ritual of consent and compulsion — but to what end? It stages a collision between psychiatric aftercare and legal authority: a young woman, recently released from a mental hospital, takes a secretary post for a demanding lawyer, and the employer–employee contract becomes a codified exchange of control and desire. The film asks whether structure can serve healing or whether structure itself becomes another mechanism of containment. What begins as vocational reintegration hardens into a set of repeated gestures that read as negotiation rather than narrative propulsion. Short sentences interrupt. Long ones unfold the implication that consent can be improvised inside institutional hierarchies. The images work in that register. Tight interior compositions and static framings concentrate attention on hands, paper, clothing and the small economies of touch; a muted color register keeps emotional temperature low while making interpersonal calibration legible. Pacing is measured: scenes unspool slowly enough to let ritual emerge as choreography. The hospital and office blend into adjacent institutional architectures, so recovery looks like a transfer of dependence rather than a transcendence of it. Interpretively, the film operates as a psychosexual study of authority: it foregrounds moral-unease and identity negotiation while resisting easy moral closure. The central relationship reads as mentor–protégé romance shaped by asymmetric power, and the aftermath lingers as bittersweet, uneasy—an ethical question rather than an answer. In that sense Secretary keeps the spectator in a state of intellectual engagement, compelling attention to the mechanics of desire and the compromises that normalize it.
